I don’t doubt the influence of AIPAC on the US…but do you think in Israel the population believes Israel is similarly controlled by the US? Thus an apathetic “oh well, nothing we can do about it” citizen response in both countries.
Based on my read of US-led intelligence agencies, the aim is always counter-insurgency/counterrevolutionary and anti-communism.
So, the function of the narratives pushed (propaganda) is pacification of the citizens.
Isn’t war really just about what William I. Robinson calls the “transnational capitalist class” that is in command with the oligarchs and their political puppets?
I wrote a response that appears to have vanished, so let me try again.
A good place for me to start is to ask what it is that Israelis do for a living? In a previous life I knew Israelis, perfectly likeable people, whose livelihoods were tied to US military production. At the time, I was surprised by how deeply integrated the US and Israeli militaries are.
The hard-right turn in Israel is correlated in time with this increasing integration of US and Israeli military production. This has turned Washington and Tel Aviv into company towns for the Pentagon. The MIC now substantially runs the US.
But Israel still has a semblance of a functioning press that the US doesn't. This leaves Israelis with better information regarding events in the region than Americans get. Even so, from US accounts, they aren't doing much that is constructive with this better information.
Thinking about this in practical political terms, this international political-economic cooperation between nominally sovereign nations begs the question of who the targets are for reclaiming some semblance of democratic control?
I maintain that it is the Western form of economic organization--- capitalism. If motivations were shifted from profits to people, the logic of the MIC disappears, along with its social legitimacy.
But this is a group project amongst which my view is one of eight billion. Thanks for the comment.

Wait, I thought the function of the MIC was for “defense” and “national security” and “spreading democracy”?!? 😀
