I thought this was a really excellent post. I had read the two articles you linked to when they first came out. And for the life of me I cannot understand why Americans forget so much of their very recent history. The msm, back in 2014 and earlier, actually covered the events in Ukraine and Russia. Even the NYTimes covered the Maidan events in Kiev. But people act as if Putin and Russia just decided to be very evil and attack Ukraine, totally unprovoked. No wonder we are always on the wrong side of whatever is happening in the world, we have no memory and no understanding. Our thinking is clouded with “American exceptionalism.” Sorry, but what a big giant crock. Even so called “leftists “, as you point out, don’t know history. So I guess we’ll just keep repeating our mistakes. Afghanistan, anyone? Vietnam?
Chile, Iran, Guatemala, El Salvador? Killing the archbishop, now a saint, during the act of raising up the Body of Christ. Untold millions of indigenous Americans, Hawaiians, Filipinos (Gen. Leonard Wood).
Really, really depressing, but what depresses me more is the lack of any historical memory, so we keep doing the same old shit over and over.
Thank you Mr. Urie, really excellent and appreciated article.
Thank you Heather for your generous words and insight.
I’ve tried to understand the missing historical memory of Americans for years. My best theory is that psychology is used by the powers that be to replace interest in public affairs with fear.
Many of my friends and acquaintances have graduate degrees, but they are the first to buy into whatever crazy and / or self-serving crap that the politicians they trust are selling.
I often wondered growing up how societies like the Third Reich got so far gone? Now we’re watching it in real time. This comment has nothing to do with the current person in the White House. Genocide Joe earned his nickname. Party politics aren’t going to save the US.
Mr. Urie, thank you for your reply. I just wanted to add that I 100% agree that party politics are definitely NOT going to save us. It never fails to amaze me that people think voting Dem will fix all our problems. As if they haven’t been mounting just as much or more during Dem presidencies as during Repub ones. I think 2016 was such a turning point, Dems seem to have gone crazy when Hillary lost and Trump won. People lost their minds and all sense of proportion, and I know I am hardly the first to point that out. I honestly don’t understand how supposedly intelligent, educated people can believe the drivel the msm puts out. It’s as if they are all under some weird spell.
Beautiful analysis. As always. 👌
Thank you Youlian.
